This week gymnast Fidel Silot Montalvo traveled to Guantánamo to visit his grandparents after competing for Orientales and putting this region at the top of the 5th Cuban Sports Olympiad held in nine of the archipelago´s fourteen provinces.
The young athlete was greeted not only by his family, but an entire neighborhood received this champion who grew up in that piece of land which witnessed the first jumps as evidence of his early motivation for gymnastics. Children showed the skills acquired enlivened with interesting performances led by physical education teachers.
In the recent national event, Silot, 22, became the king after accumulating seven gold medals resulting the most outstanding together with swimmer Jennifer Almaguer in an event that brings together the top athletes across the country.
After his excellent performance, the current captain of the Cuban team heads the country´s delegation to the Pan American qualifying round in late August, also involving the Occidentales Doveli Elena Torres, the revelation of this tournament.
Such results were echoed in his native province and Fidel Silot was selected the best athlete of May among all candidates.
The hard training of these athletes does not allow much “extracurricular activities” but he determined to go to the easternmost of the Cuban provinces to embrace his four grandparents and return to Havana to complete his preparation for upcoming international events.
