Despite being defeated in the final game against Cuba 12-5, Netherlands Baseball team won for the third time the traditional Haarlem Tournament, having concluded with a balance of 7 victories and one game lost, while Cuba followed second and Japan third.
At the match which ended activities in the Netherlands beautiful city, Germán Mesa opened with Ariel Sanchez in the center field, Dannel Castro at second base, Donald Duarte at third, Alexei Bell on the right field, Yunier Mendoza at first base and as fifth bat and Andy Zamora in the left field, Yulexis la Rosa as catcher and infielder Rudy Reyes.
Three pitchers performed for the Cuban team: Angel Peña, who in five innings took 4 hits and 3 runs, all clean, with a walk and seven strikeouts, Yoandry Portal, who could not get out in the sixth inning and Norberto Gonzalez, allowed no runs, four hits and gave five strikeouts, without walks.
Cuba, scoring five in the first inning, one in the seventh and six in the eighth, batted 14 hits including two doubles and a home run, this one from Bell. The most prominent were Alexei Bell, 4-3; Serguei 5-3, with two RBIs; La Rosa and Mendoza with two hits in 5 turns each and Duarte, 4-1 with two RBIs.
Four pitchers worked for the losers, headed by David Bergman, whom the Cubans scored five runs in four innings, although the game was lost by the third pitcher, Nick Veltkamp.
In the first Sunday match, Japan won United States 16-1, knockout in eight innings. The tournament concluded with Netherlands, 7-1, Cuba, 6-2, Japan, 3-5, United States, 2-6, and Chinese Taipei in the last position, also with 2-6.
