Guantanamo Yariulvis Cobas along with Aimee Hernandez first Cuban gold medal in Guadalajara Panamerican Games

Yariulvis Cobas and Aimee Hernandez gave Cuba on Monday its first gold medal at the 16th Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, after winning two pairs of short rowing.

Against all expectations, the girls managed a record of 7:13.76 minutes and beat the U.S. boats (Megan Walsh and Catherine Reddick-7: 14.34) and Canada (Barbara McCord and Audra Vair-7: 16.29), a day where the rowers of Argentina added three golden medal.

The following places in the heat went, in this order, to the boats from Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.

Cobas is 21 years old and is a native from the Guantanamo municipality of El Salvador, while Hernandez will turn 18 tomorrow and lives in Perico, Matanzas.

During the day Cuba also won silver and bronze medals. The first came through Concepción-Hernandez in the same specialty, while the coxless long rowing finished third.

Other five contests are planned for tomorrow and this sport will close the day after.
